Artist’s Bio

Vera Gates is a contemporary artist working in the mediums of oil, wax and found objects. Her current body of work explores themes of justice and liberation, through symbolic abstraction. Her iconography includes broken wings, full moons and geometric form.

Vera lives in a cabin in northern Vermont. She works out of an old boathouse under the watchful eye of Eagles. In the winter, Vera takes up residency in southern Arizona where she is surrounded by big skies, beautiful desert and Great Horned Owls.

Vera graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in environmental design. She worked in the field of landscape architecture and design, for over thirty years and was a founding partner of Arterra Landscape Architects, a groundbreaking design firm in in San Francisco, California. Vera has studied painting with Larry Robinson, since 2009.

The story of Vetakiam.

I grew up on a farm, in Northern Vermont, named vetakiam. I’m proud of where I come from and wanted to pay tribute to my home, with my work.

Now we grow mostly children on the farm — and vegetables!
